    We had a productive workshop held at UCLA for our California EIC Consortium Meeting during January 27 - 28, 2023. The meeting was organized by the local team (Profs. Huan Huang and Zhongbo Kang, and the postdocs and students) at UCLA. See Youtube video below for a collection of pictures.

    We had a great two-day in-person meeting held at UC Davis for our California EIC Consortium Meeting during July 18 - 19, 2022. Thanks a lot to the local team (Profs. Daniel Cebra, Manuel Calderon de la Barca Sanchez and their students) at UC Davis. See a lot of great pictures.

    Our consortium members Miguel Arratia and Ken Barish (UC Riverside), Aaron Angerami and Ron Soltz (LLNL), together with their collaborator Ben Nachman (LBNL) have been awarded a DOE grant to perform research on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) for Nuclear Physics Accelerators and Detectors. Their project title is “AI-driven detector design for the EIC”. See DOE news announcement here.

    Today Exploring Your Universe, UCLA's biggest science fair, was held virtually via zoom. Our EIC consortium has actively participated in the event. Zhongbo delivered a science talk, “Fundamental Structure of Matter”. On the other hand, the folks from UCLA, LBNL/UCB, and UC Riverside host a virtual booth, “Nuclear and Particle Physics”, during which we showed cosmic ray detector, cloud chamber, and 3D simulations for Electron Ion Collider. We have faculty Zhongbo Kang, postdoc Farid Salazar, graduate students John Terry and Mychal Valle, and undergrad Mishary Alrashed from UCLA, postdoc Kyle Lee from LBNL/UCB and graduate student Sean Preins from UC Riverside contributed to the booth during 12 - 3 PM of the booth demonstrations.     Through the support of Center for Frontiers in Nuclear Science (CFNS) of Stony Brook University, we host “The 2nd Workshop on Jets for 3D Imaging at the EIC” during 09/27 - 29, 2021. This is the first hybrid CFNS workshop since the pandemic started in March 2020. We have in-person participants at Stony Brook, as well as remote participants via zoom. Together with other colleagues, consortium members Zhongbo Kang and Miguel Arratia organized the workshop.

    Today Zhongbo presented a public lecture: “Strong Force - The structure of matter: from Rutherford’s experiment to Electron-Ion Collider” at Adventures in Particle Physics Outreach Program organized by University of Stavanger (Norway), for The XIVth Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum Conference.   • 07/06/2021
    Today DOE granted Critical Decision 1 (CD-1) for the Electron-Ion Collider. Following DOE’s approval of “mission need” (known as CD-0) in December 2019, this announcement marks the completion of the project’s definition phase and its conceptual design. Approval of CD-1 provides the authorization to begin the project execution phase, starting with preliminary design. See announcement here.

    EIC experiment at IP6 at BNL has announced the collaboration name winner - ATHENA (A Totally Hermetic Electron-Nucleus Apparatus), a name proposed by Miguel Arratia of our consortium. Check the ATHENA collaboration website.

    Our Berkeley group has recently explored how the physis requirements of the EIC can be satisfied using an all-silicon tracking detector, by consideration of three representative probes: heavy flavor hadrons, jets, and exclusive vector mesons. See arXiv:2102.08337 [nucl-ex].

    Our consortium member, Spencer Klein, was named a 2020 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) fellow. He was recognized for his “contributions in the interface of astrophysics, nuclear physics, and particle physics, including neutrino astrophysics and ultra-peripheral collisions of heavy ions”.
